The Shaukat Mahal is situated at the entrance of the bustling chowk area of Bhopal city in Madhya Pradesh where once existed the old city of Shahjehanabad. The Shaukat Mahal was built in the 1830s as a wedding gift for Sikander Jahan Begum, the first female ruler of Bhopal. Shaukat mahal is one of the architectural curiosities of Bhopal. It is believed that the idea of Shaukat Mahal has been conceived and designed by a decadent Frenchman who is supposed to be a descendant of the renowned Bourbon Dynasty of France. The Shaukat Mahal of Bhopal once served as the palace of Bhopal Nawab and is truly an architectural beauty.


History of Shaukat Mahal and Sadar Manzil


Situated right at the entrance of the Chowk area, the Mahal is a blend of both oriental and occidental styles of architecture. The triangular - shaped arches adorn the ceiling of Shaukat Mahal, white building is patterned with intrinsic floral patterns on its outer walls. The adjoining brick red building of Sadar Manzil served as a Hall of Public Audience. While the Islamic style dominates the structures of Bhopal, the Shaukat Mahal in Bhopal has an Islamic name but a very distinct architecture. Medieval Gothic style and post- Renaissance styles have been blended harmoniously to make this unique structure in Bhopal.

The Shaukat Mahal and Sadar Manzil exhibit a alliance of Asian and Western styles of architecture which makes this building stand out in the crowd of the traditional Islamic architecture of Bhopal.

Shaukat Mahal along with the light white structure of the building give it a matchless look. The outside of the palace is designed with beautiful and different floral patterns giving the Shaukat Mahal a eco-friendly appearance. The Sadar Manzil that was the Hall of Public Audience during the rule of the princes, borders the Shaukat mahal. The Shaukat Mahal and Sadar Manzil are surrounded by beautiful lawns that give it a picture postcard effect.
